C-TAC recently launched phase two of its Louisville Community Project. To honor those who work so tirelessly to improve serious illness care, C-TAC held the Louisville Community Care Project Caregiver Recognition Event. The event was hosted in 40203 by Louisville native and Senior Advisor to C-TAC’s Interfaith Workgroup, Elder Angela Overton. This event highlighted the spirit of the Blue Chair Fund and acted as a reminder of how important it is to acknowledge the dignity of every individual and to listen and really hear what patients are sharing.
“Caregivers of the Year” were honored for their extraordinary work and awarded to Rev. Dr. Angela Johnson, Rev. Adrian Baker, Pastor Alma Wooley, Rev. Stachelle Bussey, Jurlann Bell, Carolyn Board, Justina Bradley, Renee Carson, Michelle Cox, Melissa Golden, Cynthia Hall, Nachon Hobbs, Daisy Mitchell, and Deborah Mitchell Wright.
Pastor Alma Wooley reminds us that “this project shows us that we can live with dignity and, when it’s time, we can also die with dignity” … “C-TAC was there with us as we supported those on the street in need.”
C-TAC is proud of these changemakers for continuing to bring people together to improve health equity in their community. This work in bringing together the community, faith leaders, and caregivers is a great step toward bringing Blue Chair empowerment to more people.
Like Shirley, the originator of the Blue Chair Story, C-TAC believes that it is only through listening that healing can come to patients, clinicians, and the health system itself. Her vision was that places of worship would serve as a beacon, a trusted provider of social connectedness, resources, and spiritual support for millions of patients facing the unimaginable.
Elder Angela Overton expressed the importance of this work, saying “The time to do what is right is right now! We stand on the reality that good health care is not given to all. This is not only unfair but is a defect in our moral compass and in our humanity as a country that has permeated our health care systems. C-TAC and their partners in the Louisville Project will work tirelessly and without fail to work to ensure that persons who are unable to receive good health care will.”

This work began when The Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC) launched the Louisville Pilot Project in August 2020 to support people who live in Louisville’s 40203 area code where the average annual income is $12,880 for an individual and $26,500 for a family of four. The goal of the four-month program, which ran until December 2020, was to improve the quality of life for community members dealing with serious illness by providing access to care, changing the care model, and investing in trusted partners, such as faith leader driven coalitions, to address disparities in access to care.
