Ashley Smith is a board-certified physician assistant with an additional certification of added qualifications in psychiatry. Ashley works on the psychiatry consultation-liaison service at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA. In her role, Ashley manages and oversees a large C-L service. Ashley also provides direct patient care in complex psychiatric and psychosocial cases. She liaisons with medical and surgical services throughout the hospital and helps facilitate communication and understanding of psychiatric care for patients on the medical floor. Through her experience, she saw a need to provide additional intervention and support to patients suffering from severe mental illness and behavioral challenges, in addition the need to support and empower staff. Ashley helped start a behavior emergency response team (BERT) and continues to co-manage the BERT service.
Ashley received a bachelor’s degree in sport sciences from University of the Pacific and a Master of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. She practiced as an athletic trainer in a busy sports medicine orthopaedic clinic for 5 years before returning to school. Ashley received a Masters of Medical Science from Emory University, Physician Assistant Program in 2014.
Ashley currently serves on the Grady ethics committee and participates in a weekly spinal cord injury interdisciplinary team. She is an active member of the Healthcare Ethics Consortium (HEC) advisory board. She previously served on the hospital’s Schwartz Rounds planning committee.
