As a longtime advocate for womanist theology and warrior for social justice in all forms, Rev. Diane Smalley was used to “claiming her space” in churches and in her community. But when cancer struck, her advocacy took a personal turn as she faced, first, an insensitive oncologist and then the physical and financial challenges of treatment and survival. But thanks to the care from a new medical “dream team” and the support of various charitable organizations, she was able to continue living on her terms until her death in 2016.
Rev. Smalley was a small woman whose larger-than-life legacy lives on today in the work we do. She was dedicated to transforming care for those living with serious illness, especially the most vulnerable and urged us to focus on “opening doors,” to greater transparency, empathy and treatment that respects patients’ values and goals. She never gave up fighting for health equity. And neither do we. To join us or learn more, visit Membership.
