Norma Bauerschmidt | The Caregivers’ Journey

CTAC + Apr 01, 2022

Norma Bauerschmidt was about to have the time of her life, although when the last chapter of her story began, her future looked grim. Her beloved husband of 67 years had just died, and she had just been diagnosed with uterine cancer. She had a choice to make: endure traditional medical treatment or live with her son, daughter-in-law and their poodle as they traveled around the country in their motorized home. “I’m 90,” she said. “I’m hitting the road.” And for the next year, this amazing quartet drove from Northern Michigan to Washington state, visiting national landmarks and having adventures along the way (including ditching her prescription pain killers for CBD oil). Norma wanted to be remembered as “a nice person.” But to her thousands of followers and friends, she was much more–an inspiration to live life fully and with joy.

Norma was lucky. She had a family whose lifestyle and resources could accommodate caregiving almost to the end. For most family caregivers, it’s a very different journey as they struggle with significant health, emotional and financial challenges. C-TAC is committed to lifting their burden and supporting caregiver needs through policies that ensure greater funding, resources and benefits. Join us.
