Member Spotlight – Independence Blue Cross

CTAC + Dec 22, 2022

Independence Blue Cross (Independence) is the leading health insurance company in southeastern Pennsylvania. With our affiliates, we serve more than 8 million people nationwide. For more than 80 years, we have worked to enhance the health and well-being of the people and communities it serves.

As a licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Independence provides families with the security and stability that comes with a Blue Card. We offer products and services that fit the way people live. Our portfolio includes coverage for national businesses, large employer groups, and small businesses; portable benefits for when you travel or live abroad; Medicare supplemental and Medicare Advantage products; Medicaid; and specialty services such as vision and dental coverage.

We serve and inspire our members and communities. We sponsor community programs focused on good health like the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and the Indego bike share program. We support organizations that are addressing the greatest healthcare challenges in our community through our Independence Blue Cross Foundation. And our active Blue Crew volunteer program makes an impact throughout the region.

We are helping to shape healthcare in the Philadelphia region and beyond. We have innovative partnerships with fellow world-class organizations in Philadelphia and across the country that help to enable better health for its members.

Independence is a champion for health equity and positive social change in the communities it serves. By collaborating with community partners, we hope to identify critical needs in the region and provide support where it is most essential. We collaborate with Cayaba Care and Cocolife.black to address maternal health equity disparities, Uno Health to give Medicare Advantage members more support enrolling in several federal and state government programs, MANNA to ensure seriously ill members have access to healthy meals and nutritional counseling, and more. We also launched CommunityLink™ in partnership with Signify Health to break down traditional barriers between clinical and social care and improve health outcomes for seniors.

Independence joined C-TAC because it shares a vision of improving the lives of people experiencing serious illness. We recognize the disheartening results of living with a serious illness: the isolation, the financial challenge, the chaos, and the disruption in daily life. We also know that only as a group focused on advocacy, pushing for policy changes, and aligning/determining best practices amongst us, can we come to meaningful permanent solutions for these patients.

As one of the first Medicare Advantage health plans to specifically file for home-based palliative care in our 2019 CMS bid, we continue to look at different approaches to improve on quality and total cost of care. We believe that working with C-TAC will help us refine our approach which will be immensely valuable.
