Member Spotlight – Kansas Advocates for Better Care (KABC)

CTAC + Feb 01, 2023

Kansans for Improvement of Nursing Homes (KINH) was launched in 1975 by Petey Cerf along with other citizens concerned about the poor state of care in nursing homes. They had a profound impact on the quality of care by touring nursing homes and presenting their findings to Kansas legislators, resulting in significant new public policies.

In the mid-90’s the name changed to Kansas Advocates for Better Care (KABC), to reflect a commitment to quality in all long-term care settings. Our core values are focused on advocating for dignity, equity, and fairness for all persons in long-term care.

KABC’s vision is that all older Kansans receive quality long-term care in the setting of their choice. This vision is supported through legislative advocacy, education, empowerment, and a comprehensive information, referral, and resources system to assist with navigating the ever-changing landscape of long-term care. KABC also seeks to include diverse voice in the work of the organization and to serve as a counterpoint to the pervasive ageism throughout society.

One of KABC’s key objectives for the upcoming year is to form strategic alliances with other advocacy organizations, both statewide and nationally. Advocacy is at the heart of KABC’s work and is an essential element for fulfilling the mission and supporting the vision of KABC. Effective advocacy requires partnerships with coalitions that also share KABC’s priorities, which is why KABC is thrilled to join C-TAC.

As the first Kansas organization to partner with C-TAC, KABC looks forward to collaborating with and learning from members of a dynamic coalition to advocate for access to care based on what matters most to individuals and their families. KABC is eager to collaborate with other states and key decision-makers to advocate alongside the coalition to advance equitable and accessible care.

KABC aligns itself with C-TAC’s vision of increasing home and community-based care and increased support for the coordination of services. KABC also supports C-TAC’s core principles: care is person and care is inclusive. Quality long-term care incorporates both principles. All older persons should enjoy an excellent quality of life and care, no matter where they choose to live.
