Advance Care Planning for All: Case Studies for Scaling ACP from Pioneers in the Field

Join leaders in the field on October 12, 2023 at 1PM EST as they discuss best practices and tools for delivering the highest quality of advance care planning and shared decision making to patients. Plus, hear from leadership at WiserCare and Respecting Choices as they discuss their strategy and reasoning behind joining forces.
Speakers:

Stephanie Anderson, Executive Director, Respecting Choices
Dr. Stephanie Anderson is the Executive Director of Respecting Choices. She is responsible for designing and leading strategy and operations including the delivery of this internationally recognized program. She has over 25 years of experience in palliative care, hospice, home care, case management, and emergency medicine. Dr. Anderson earned her doctor of nursing practice degree from the University of Iowa specializing in health systems administration. Dr. Anderson has served in a variety of leadership roles. In these roles, her palliative care program was awarded Joint Commission Certification and the system received the Circle of Life award from the American Hospital Association. She co-chaired the Iowa Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment (IPOST) movement, resulting in new legislation and statewide implementation. Dr. Anderson joined Respecting Choices in 2013 as a senior faculty consultant and evolved into the director of consultation and education services prior to her current role. Dr. Anderson currently chairs the National POLST central region leaders group, co-chairs the POLST program assistance committee and a member of the program standards committee. She is vice president of Advance Care Planning – International. Dr. Anderson believes person-centered decision making based on an individual’s goals and values truly transforms care and should be the top priority to delivering exceptional whole-person healthcare.

Chris Brinneman, Advance Care Planning Manager/Respecting Choices ACP Faculty, Parkview Health
Chris Brinneman is the Advance Care Planning Manager and is a certified Respecting Choices ACP First Steps Faculty with Parkview Health. Chris is also a Next Steps and Advanced Steps Facilitator and Instructor. She has a history of working in the hospital and health care industry, and has demonstrated skill working with nonprofit organizations, healthcare management, healthcare, leadership, education, and strategic planning. Chris has a master’s degree in focused in Social Work from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.

Roberta Geidner, Manager/ Horizon/Advance Care Planning Coordinator, Well Span Health
Roberta Geidner is a Manager/Horizon Advance Care Planning Coordinator at WellSpan Health. Roberta has personal experience with advance care planning through her late husband, Bob, who underwent hospice care for pancreatic cancer. When she first started at WellSpan in 2017, the organization had the goal of changing the advance planning culture and creating a community that could discuss death and cherish those difficult conversations they may have with their loved ones so that each individual’s wishes are known and respected so that they may die with dignity. Roberta is highly talented, with 20+ years of experience managing domestic and international non-profit and for-profit organizations. She is also a change agent with experience in fiscal and operational turnarounds, a champion fundraiser, a savvy administrator, an excellent team builder, and a polished public speaker. She is also the owner and founder of RGA Consulting Services. Roberta holds a Bachelor of Arts in Clinical Psychology and Social Work from Defiance College and a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology and Organizational Development from Kent State University.

Arul Thangavel, MD, CEO, WiserCare
Arul is a practicing Internal Medicine physician with extensive research, quality improvement and clinical experience. He completed Internal Medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco, where he also went to medical school and graduated with honors. Directly before joining WiserCare, Arul was both an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown and a Foreign Affairs Officer at the U.S. Department of State. Prior to and during medical school, Arul researched in multiple fields, including human neuroscience, cognitive science, psychiatry, meta analytic techniques, hospital quality improvement and global health practice and policy. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and newspaper articles.
