Puneeta Sharma, MD, MHCM, CPE

Dr. Puneeta Sharma currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for the Valley Medical Group. Dr.  Sharma completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at NYCH&H/ Lincoln, Bronx NY  where she was appointed as a Chief Resident. Post residency, she worked as a hospitalist while serving  as the Associate Program Director for Lincoln’s large and diverse Internal Medicine Residency Program.  While catering to the needs of patients with serious illnesses, she developed a passion for taking care of  individuals with advanced illnesses. After pursuing Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care, she  became the Program Director for Lincoln’s Joint Commission Certified and ACGME accredited Hospice  and Palliative Care Fellowship Program where she trained fellows from diverse training backgrounds.  Recognizing the need to take Hospice and Palliative Care in community settings, Dr. Sharma joined  Valley 5 years ago and has assumed roles of increasing responsibilities. Raising system wide awareness  of Palliative Care since her start, Dr.Sharma expanded Palliative Care services across the Valley  continuum in multiple settings. Since 2018, she has been a New Jersey Health Executive Leadership  Fellow on improving end of life care. She has also served on the New Jersey Hospital Association’s  Practitioner Orders for life Sustaining Treatment workgroup to improve end of life care for New Jersians.  In 2019, Dr. Sharma served as the Chair of Medical Subspecialties overseeing delivery of Rheumatology,  GI, Endocrine, Dermatology, Senior Care, Geriatrics, Rehab, Pulmonary and Critical Care across Valley  Health System. She is involved with strategic partnerships both internally and externally with community  partners. Passionate about reframing the experience of health care from both consumer and provider  perspective, she pursued Masters in Health Care Management at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public  Health. With a relentless appetite for setting up and continuously developing and improving programs  and processes, she is currently focusing on improving access, provider performance & experience and  advancing health equity initiatives at Valley.
