Patrick T. Courneya, MD

Dr. Patrick T. Courneya returns to HealthPartners following six years at Kaiser Permanente as executive vice president and chief medical officer for national health plan and hospitals quality. Courneya led Kaiser Permanente in delivering on nationally recognized quality and service, and strategies focused on improving health and affordability, including telemedicine, mental health and wellness and Medicare, for its 12.3 million members. He also served as the national executive sponsor for the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, which is set to open this summer.

Prior to Kaiser Permanente, Courneya served 10 years as medical director and associate medical director for the HealthPartners health plan. A Minnesota native, he was also a family practice clinician in the organization for more than 20 years.

Over his career, Courneya chaired the Chief Medical Officer Leadership Council at America’s Health Insurance Plans and the Medical Directors Council at the Alliance of Community Health Plans. In addition, Becker’s Hospital Review has recognized Courneya as one of 100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know for four years running (2016-2019). He currently serves as Chair of the NAMI California Board of Directors and is a member of the NCQA Standards Committee and the C-TAC Board of Directors.
